l&rsquo;Italie depuis 1871. Situ\u00e9e au centre-ouest de la p\u00e9ninsule italienne, sur les c\u00f4tes de la mer Tyrrh\u00e9nienne, elle est \u00e9galement la capitale de la province de Rome, de la r\u00e9gion du Latium, et fut celle de l&rsquo;Empire romain durant plusieurs si\u00e8cles. En 2014, elle compte 2\u00a0869\u00a0461 habitants \u00e9tablis sur 1\u00a0285 km\u00b2, ce qui fait d&rsquo;elle la commune la plus peupl\u00e9e d&rsquo;Italie et la plus \u00e9tendue d&rsquo;Europe apr\u00e8s Moscou et Londres. Son aire urbaine, qui recense 4\u00a0321\u00a0244 habitants en 2013, est en revanche moins importante que celle de Milan et Naples.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Consid\u00e9rablement agrandie par de grands travaux sous Jules C\u00e9sar et surtout sous Auguste, la ville est partiellement d\u00e9truite lors du Grand incendie de Rome &#8211; le <span class=\"lang-la\" lang=\"la\">Circus Maximus<\/span> notamment. \u00c0 partir du <span class=\"romain\">xv<\/span><sup>e<\/sup>\u00a0si\u00e8cle, presque tous les papes depuis Nicolas V (1447-1455) perp\u00e9tuent la tradition de l&rsquo;architecture romaine et ambitionnent de faire de Rome le principal centre culturel et artistique de l&rsquo;Occident.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>La ville devient l&rsquo;un des foyers de la Renaissance italienne, avec Florence et Venise, et donne naissance au style baroque &#8211; dont t\u00e9moigne encore son centre historique, class\u00e9 par l&rsquo;UNESCO comme site du patrimoine mondial. Des artistes comme Michel-Ange, Rapha\u00ebl ou Le Bernin s&rsquo;y installent et produisent des \u0153uvres telles que la Basilique Saint-Pierre, la Chapelle Sixtine ou les Chambres de Rapha\u00ebl. Au <span class=\"romain\">xix<\/span><sup>e<\/sup>\u00a0si\u00e8cle, Rome est le symbole de l&rsquo;unit\u00e9 italienne et devient la capitale du Royaume d&rsquo;Italie, puis de la R\u00e9publique apr\u00e8s la Seconde Guerre mondiale.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Ville globale, Rome est la troisi\u00e8me destination touristique la plus visit\u00e9e d&rsquo;Europe derri\u00e8re Londres et Paris. Les mus\u00e9es du Vatican et le Colis\u00e9e sont parmi les sites les plus fr\u00e9quent\u00e9s. Rome compte \u00e9galement de nombreux ponts et fontaines, 900 \u00e9glises, ainsi qu&rsquo;un grand nombre de mus\u00e9es et d&rsquo;universit\u00e9s. Outre le tourisme, l&rsquo;\u00e9conomie de la ville est \u00e9galement orient\u00e9e vers les nouvelles technologies, les m\u00e9dias et les t\u00e9l\u00e9communications depuis les ann\u00e9es 2000. Cern\u00e9e par sept collines, la ville se situe \u00e0 l&#8217;embouchure du Tibre et est divis\u00e9e en vingt-deux rioni. La g\u00e9n\u00e9alogie l\u00e9gendaire de Romulus permet de donner une origine divine \u00e0 Rome\u00a0: la Ville aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e, car les dieux le voulaient ainsi. Les Romains affectionnent de lier l&rsquo;histoire de Rome \u00e0 celle de la mythique ville de\u00a0Troie\u00a0et de sa chute\u00a0; peut-\u00eatre trouve-t-on l\u00e0 l&rsquo;intention de la fable, rapport\u00e9e par\u00a0<a title=\"Plutarque\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plutarque\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plutarque<\/a>, sur une origine de la ville du fait de naufrag\u00e9s troyens et troyennes, reprenant la trame narrative des\u00a0<a title=\"Nauprestides\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nauprestides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nauprestides<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Rome \u00e9tait la capitale de l&rsquo;Empire romain. Elle a conserv\u00e9 de nombreux monuments antiques, dont le Colis\u00e9e est l&rsquo;un des plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres. Dans cet amphith\u00e9\u00e2tre qui pouvait accueillir jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 60 000 personnes avaient lieu, entre autres, des combats de gladiateurs et d\u2019animaux. \u00c9difi\u00e9 entre 70 et 80, c&rsquo;est l&rsquo;\u0153uvre des empereurs Vespasien et Titus. Autre exemple de monumentalit\u00e9, le Circus Maximus, qui connut son apog\u00e9e au iiie si\u00e8cle : il mesurait alors 600 m\u00e8tres de long pour 200 m\u00e8tres dans sa plus grande largeur, et pr\u00e8s de 250 000 spectateurs pouvaient assister \u00e0 ses courses de chevaux.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Le quartier du Forum romain et du Colis\u00e9e, c\u0153ur de la ville antique, est domin\u00e9, entre autres, par l&rsquo;arc de Constantin, \u00e9rig\u00e9 en 315 pour comm\u00e9morer la victoire de l\u2019Empereur Constantin sur Maxence, l&rsquo;arc de Titus, l&rsquo;arc de Septime S\u00e9v\u00e8re. Les Forums imp\u00e9riaux, le Capitole et les mus\u00e9es capitolins, le Panth\u00e9on, les thermes de Diocl\u00e9tien et de Caracalla et les onze Aqueducs de Rome, les catacombes sont autant d&rsquo;autres monuments c\u00e9l\u00e8bres. Le Forum romain \u00e9tait, au temps de l&rsquo;Antiquit\u00e9, une grande place o\u00f9 les Romains se rassemblaient pour discuter d&rsquo;affaires. C&rsquo;\u00e9tait l\u00e0 que si\u00e9geait la Curie (S\u00e9nat). Cette place \u00e9tait le centre religieux et \u00e9conomique de l&rsquo;Empire romain. En effet, il y avait de nombreux temples, dont le temple de Jupiter, le temple de Juno Moneta, o\u00f9 le tr\u00e9sor de Rome \u00e9tait conserv\u00e9, le temple de Vesta, contenant le feu sacr\u00e9, bref, l&rsquo;ensemble des symboles de la culture romaine. Au Moyen \u00c2ge, les vestiges se sont enfouis sous la terre. Cependant certaines pierres furent r\u00e9utilis\u00e9es pour la construction de monuments et d&rsquo;\u00e9difices.
