jusqu&rsquo;en 1932) est la capitale historique de la Provence. Son histoire d\u00e9bute avec la soumission aux Romains des Salyens, f\u00e9d\u00e9ration gauloise regroupant plusieurs peuples de la Basse-Provence. Leur capitale, situ\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;oppidum d&rsquo;Entremont, est habit\u00e9e depuis le d\u00e9but du iie si\u00e8cle av. J.-C. En 124 av. J.-C., le consul romain Gaius Sextius Calvinus d\u00e9mant\u00e8le l&rsquo;oppidum et cr\u00e9e deux ans plus tard la ville d&rsquo;Aquae Sextiae, au pied d&rsquo;Entremont. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">C&rsquo;est cette ville romaine qui est devenue Aix. Situ\u00e9e sur un axe strat\u00e9gique entre l&rsquo;Italie et l&rsquo;Espagne (sur la via Aur\u00e9lia), Aix permet \u00e0 la R\u00e9publique romaine de s\u00e9curiser toute une r\u00e9gion alors aux mains des Salyens. Pourtant, des incursions ennemies viennent mettre en p\u00e9ril la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de la Gaule narbonnaise et, en 102 av. J.-C., le consul Caius Marius d\u00e9truit une arm\u00e9e de Cimbres et de Teutons, non loin d&rsquo;Aix. Cette bataille, d\u00e9nomm\u00e9e bataille d&rsquo;Aix, permet de prot\u00e9ger l&rsquo;Italie d&rsquo;une invasion de ces tribus germaines. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Dans le m\u00eame temps, Aix se d\u00e9veloppe et prend les caract\u00e9ristiques d&rsquo;une ville romaine.
