Les pierres furent renvers\u00e9es, les foyers \u00e9teints, et le temple de D\u00e9m\u00e9ter livr\u00e9 aux flammes, comme si la terre elle-m\u00eame, bless\u00e9e, voyait son sanctuaire profan\u00e9. Plus tard, durant la guerre du P\u00e9loponn\u00e8se, l\u2019Attique envahie par le roi Pleistoanax connut \u00e0 nouveau le tumulte, et la cit\u00e9 fut meurtrie par les soubresauts des ambitions humaines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Pourtant, son sanctuaire rayonnait d\u2019une gloire singuli\u00e8re\u00a0: ses myst\u00e8res attiraient les \u00e2mes en qu\u00eate d\u2019initiation et d\u2019esp\u00e9rance. Mais au IIe\u00a0si\u00e8cle de notre \u00e8re, lorsque la pression des peuples dits barbares s\u2019intensifia aux fronti\u00e8res de l\u2019Empire, la convoitise guerri\u00e8re ressurgit. Vers\u00a0170, les Costoboces la pill\u00e8rent\u00a0; l\u2019empereur Marc Aur\u00e8le contribua \u00e0 relever son sanctuaire, offrant \u00e0 ses ruines une seconde respiration. Enfin, en 395 apr\u00e8s J.-C., les Wisigoths d\u2019Alaric Ier la r\u00e9duisirent en cendres, scellant dans la poussi\u00e8re la fin d\u2019un monde ancien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Aujourd\u2019hui encore, la cit\u00e9 porte en elle les strates de son histoire. Une part de sa population moderne parle l\u2019arvanite, \u00e9cho vivant des migrations pass\u00e9es. Au XXe\u00a0si\u00e8cle, \u00c9leusis est devenue l\u2019une des grandes communes de la banlieue nord d\u2019Ath\u00e8nes\u00a0: ses raffineries dressent leurs silhouettes d\u2019acier, ses industries lourdes et ses chantiers navals battent au rythme du travail, et ses commerces \u00e9tendent leur influence sur les villes voisines.
