Le fer ne reste pas fer tr\u00e8s longtemps, il s&rsquo;allie volontiers \u00e0 l&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne et, selon les circonstances, donne naissance \u00e0 trois oxydes aux noms presque alchimiques :<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">l&rsquo;oxyde ferreux, FeO, le plus discret ;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">l&rsquo;oxyde ferrique, Fe<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>, celui des ocres et des rouges ;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">l&rsquo;oxyde magn\u00e9tique, Fe<sub>3<\/sub>O<sub>4<\/sub>, sombre et attir\u00e9 par les aimants.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Mais la rouille, la vraie, celle qui ronge ma porte, est plus gourmande encore. \u00c0 l&rsquo;air libre, d\u00e8s qu&rsquo;un peu d&rsquo;humidit\u00e9 s&rsquo;en m\u00eale, le fer se couvre d&rsquo;oxydes et d&rsquo;oxyhydroxydes ferriques hydrat\u00e9s, de l&rsquo;eau prisonni\u00e8re de sa propre corrosion. Les chimistes l&rsquo;\u00e9crivent Fe<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>\u00b7nH<sub>2<\/sub>O et FeO(OH)\u00b7nH<sub>2<\/sub>O. Je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re y lire une signature : celle du sel, du vent et des si\u00e8cles.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Et c&rsquo;est l\u00e0 son drame : la rouille est poreuse. Elle laisse passer l&rsquo;air et l&rsquo;eau, et le mal avance en profondeur jusqu&rsquo;au c\u0153ur du m\u00e9tal. L&rsquo;aluminium, lui, se prot\u00e8ge d&rsquo;une fine pellicule d&rsquo;oxyde \u00e9tanche qui l&rsquo;arr\u00eate net. Le fer n&rsquo;a pas cette chance, il se laisse d\u00e9vorer jusqu&rsquo;au bout, avec une lenteur que ma porte portait comme une dignit\u00e9.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Les physiciens disposent m\u00eame d&rsquo;un outil \u00e9tonnant, la spectroscopie M\u00f6ssbauer, qui reconna\u00eet les diff\u00e9rents \u00e9tats d&rsquo;oxydation du fer et en mesure les proportions dans un m\u00e9lange. Elle sait lire, dans un \u00e9clat de rouille, ce que mes yeux ne per\u00e7oivent que comme de la couleur.<\/span><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"les-ions-du-fer-en-solution-aqueuse\"><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-size: 20px;\"><strong><span id=\"Les_ions_du_fer_en_solution_aqueuse\" class=\"mw-headline\">Les ions du fer en solution aqueuse<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Quand la pluie et les embruns dissolvent le fer, il se lib\u00e8re sous forme d&rsquo;ions, avec deux visages principaux.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Le premier, Fe<sup>2+<\/sup> (l&rsquo;ion fer(II), autrefois dit ferreux), prend des teintes variables selon son entourage. Dissous sous forme de sel de Mohr, il donne un vert p\u00e2le tr\u00e8s doux, et cette solution reste stable tant que le pH demeure inf\u00e9rieur \u00e0 6. Au-del\u00e0, l&rsquo;hydroxyde de fer(II), Fe(OH)<sub>2<\/sub>, se met \u00e0 pr\u00e9cipiter.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Le second, Fe<sup>3+<\/sup> (l&rsquo;ion fer(III), autrefois dit ferrique), est plus capricieux : orange dans le chlorure de fer(III), incolore dans le nitrate de fer(III).
