Il suppose alors que ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est d\u00fb au rayonnement naturel de la <a title=\"Terre\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terre<\/a>. Ses recherches sur l&rsquo;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 atmosph\u00e9rique, l&rsquo;ionisation et la condensation le conduisent \u00e0 concevoir la premi\u00e8re chambre \u00e0 brouillard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> Il s&rsquo;agit pour sa partie charg\u00e9e principalement de protons (88 %), noyaux d&rsquo;h\u00e9lium (9 %), le reste \u00e9tant constitu\u00e9 d&rsquo;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00e9lectrons, de diff\u00e9rents\u00a0nucl\u00e9ons\u00a0(noyaux d&rsquo;atomes) ainsi que de quantit\u00e9s infimes d&rsquo;antimati\u00e8re\u00a0l\u00e9g\u00e8re (antiprotons\u00a0et\u00a0positrons). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">La partie neutre est quant \u00e0 elle constitu\u00e9e de\u00a0rayons gamma\u00a0ainsi que de\u00a0neutrinos. Cette derni\u00e8re n&rsquo;est pas toujours d\u00e9compt\u00e9e dans le rayonnement cosmique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">La particule la plus abondante au\u00a0niveau de la mer\u00a0est le\u00a0muon, car celui-ci interagit peu avec la mati\u00e8re\u00a0: on en d\u00e9nombre en moyenne un par centim\u00e8tre carr\u00e9 par minute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> Malgr\u00e9 sa dur\u00e9e de vie de 2,2\u00a0<abbr class=\"abbr\" title=\"microseconde\">\u00b5s<\/abbr>, qui correspond \u00e0 une distance maximale de 660\u00a0<abbr class=\"abbr\" title=\"m\u00e8tre\">m<\/abbr>\u00a0\u00e0 la\u00a0vitesse de la lumi\u00e8re, le muon parcourt des distances beaucoup plus grandes gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&rsquo;effet de\u00a0dilatation du temps\u00a0pr\u00e9dit par la\u00a0relativit\u00e9 restreinte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Les particules primaires (arrivant sur l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re) ont une \u00e9nergie qui peut atteindre 10<sup>20<\/sup>\u00a0eV. En dehors des\u00a0neutrinos, les particules d\u00e9tect\u00e9es au sol sont essentiellement des particules secondaires issues de\u00a0gerbes atmosph\u00e9riques, d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie bien inf\u00e9rieure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">En\u00a02017\u00a0les premi\u00e8res confirmations de l&rsquo;origine g\u00e9ographique du rayonnement haute-\u00e9nergie sont donn\u00e9es par la publication du r\u00e9sultat de 12\u00a0ans de mesures faites depuis\u00a02004\u00a0\u00e0 l&rsquo;Observatoire Pierre-Auger\u00a0\u00e0\u00a0Malarg\u00fce\u00a0en\u00a0Argentine : ce rayonnement est clairement extragalactique, venant de galaxies situ\u00e9es dans une partie de l&rsquo;espace situ\u00e9e au-del\u00e0 des confins de la Voie Lact\u00e9e. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">L&rsquo;observatoire a en effet capt\u00e9 et \u00e9tudi\u00e9 environ 30\u00a0000\u00a0rayons pr\u00e9sentant des \u00e9nergies d\u00e9passant\u00a0<span title=\"1,281\u00a0741 J ou 7,718\u00a0824\u00a0\u00d7\u202f10+\u00b2\u2070 kJ\/mol ou 9,918\u00a04\u00a0\u00d7\u202f10+\u00b2\u00b9 nm\">8<\/span>\u00a0\u00d7\u202f10<sup>18<\/sup>\u00a0\u00e9lectrons-volts. L&rsquo;\u00e9tude de la distribution angulaire de leurs entr\u00e9es dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re a fini par mettre en \u00e9vidence un motif (l\u00e9g\u00e8rement dipolaire<sup id=\"cite_ref-publi2017_5-1\" class=\"reference\">5<\/sup>) sur la\u00a0sph\u00e8re c\u00e9leste. Ce motif \u00e9tait situ\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;oppos\u00e9 de la direction de la\u00a0Voie lact\u00e9e. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Ce flux \u00e9manerait donc d&rsquo;un exc\u00e8s de galaxies situ\u00e9 \u00e0 une centaine de millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re.
