Video art emerged during the late 1960s as new consumer video technology such as\u00a0video tape recorders\u00a0became available outside corporate broadcasting.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Video art can take many forms: recordings that are\u00a0broadcast;\u00a0installations\u00a0viewed in galleries or museums; works streamed online, distributed as\u00a0video tapes, or\u00a0DVDs; and\u00a0performances\u00a0which may incorporate one or more\u00a0television sets,\u00a0video monitors, and projections, displaying live or recorded images and sounds.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Video art is named for the original analog\u00a0video tape, which was the most commonly used recording technology in much of the form history into the 1990s. With the advent of digital recording equipment, many artists began to explore digital technology as a new way of expression.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">One of the key differences between video art and theatrical cinema is that video art does not necessarily rely on many of the conventions that define theatrical cinema.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Video art may not employ the use of\u00a0actors, may contain no\u00a0dialogue, may have no discernible\u00a0narrative\u00a0or\u00a0plot, or adhere to any of the other conventions that generally define\u00a0motion pictures\u00a0as entertainment.
